NFLPA recommendation to players: 'Save your money'

The NFL Players Association has made a strong recommendation to its constituents in the form of a memo to their agents.

  1. Nolan,

I think this NFLPA resolution is a good first step, but won't be sufficient. I'm assuming that the PA also has a strike fund that the players can take advantage of in dire circumstances should there be concerted action taken by the league.

I'm a little skeptical about the rate of participation that will result from leaving it to the advisors to relay the resolution to their clients. I feel like the PA should also take additional measures outside of advising players only to save a portion of their 09 performance pay to prepare for a lockout... like telling them to save a portion of their game checks this season? I know the PA won't be able to set up an automatic deduction from their pay checks that would go into an individual strike fund without management's consent, as it wasn't a bargained for term and condition in the existing CBA. I just hope the players take the labor situation seriously and are educated and informed enough to make their own plans outside of this performance pay resolution.

  2. Thanks for the response. The NFLPA has set up a strike fund and implemented financial planning and a savings plan for the guys. It is up to us to keep promoting it to the players and wives along with them taking action themselves. Great question!

    Best,

    Nolan
